NEW YORK ACADEMY OF DENTISTRY

 POLICIES

Fellowship

 11/88 Past presidents who have retired from dental practice will be guests of the academy on Past President’s Night.

11/88 Nominations for active or associate fellowship must be received by the Fellowship Committee no later than 15 November to be considered during a specific Academy year. Nominations received after this date shall be reviewed the following academy year.

11/88 The names and addresses of those nominated by the Fellowship Committee shall be distributed with the notices of the January and February meetings. After due consideration of all comments, the names of those approved by the Fellowship Committee shall be distributed in the notice of the March meeting and presented at the March Fellowship meeting.

11/88 The annual business meeting shall be the March meeting.

11/88 Election of officers and elected officials shall take place at the March Fellowship meeting.

11/88 Installation of officers and elected officials shall take place at the April Fellowship meeting.

1/89 Candidates for Honorary Fellowship should either:

a. Present before the Academy after proposal.

b. Be presented to the Academy before proposal.

4/99 No nominations or seconds from the nominee’s office will be accepted although letters of support are welcome.

10/05 Any use of all or part of the membership list of the New York Academy of Dentistry, for any purpose other than Academy business, requires approval of the Board of Directors of the Academy. In addition, in no case shall the confidential list of nominees for Fellowship be used for any purpose other than approval of the nominees for Fellowship. Violations will be referred to the

Ethics Committee

2/06 The Board of the New York Academy of Dentistry recognizes that advertising is legal. However, it does not encourage or support advertising by Academy Fellows and feels that it is not in keeping with its perception of professionalism. Fellows who feel that they must advertise should follow the American Dental Association’s Principles of Ethics and Codes of Conduct and the rules of State Boards of Dentistry who establish the standards that all dentists who advertise must meet. The fact that a Fellow of the Academy engages in advertising will not prejudice that person in their relationship to the Academy. In addition, Fellows are recommended to use the following

as a guide:

1. Advertising by dentists should support the public’s confidence in the competence,integrity and commitment of the dental profession to serve the public’s dental needsin the tradition of dentistry as a learned profession.

2. Advertising by dentists should help the public understand its dental needs and the dental care delivery process, and should uphold the dignity of the dental profession.

3. Advertising must be truthful and accurate, and not false, misleading or deceptive. Ambiguous or confusing advertising can be misleading which could be in violation of the ADA Code of Ethics or the rules of the State Board’s of Dentistry.

4. Care should be taken in describing the dentist’s area of practice and competency

10/11 The attire at the fellowship meeting dais shall be at the discretion of the Academy President. If the President decides on formal attire, speakers are requested, but not required, to conform. The Past Presidents night in October will always be a formal attire evening.

10/11 At one regular meeting each year, we shall recognize the contribution(s) of one or more of our Fellows in the area of Humanitarian Missions. If appropriate, a short (5-10 minute) presentation by a volunteer may precede the main presentation for the evening.

BOARD

11/88 The President should consult with the President Elect before appointing the Program Committee.

11/88 A parliamentarian may be appointed by the President.

11/88 A “History of the Academy”, inscribed by the President, shall be presented to all speakers and new Fellows.

11/88 A certificate of appreciation shall be presented to all speakers.

11/88 There shall be two gavels, a regular and ceremonial.

11/88 The outgoing President shall receive a certificate of appreciation and a Past President’s pin during the meeting of the installation of officers.

11/88 Notice of death of a past president shall be placed in the New York Times.

 

11/88 A memorial donation will be given to the Advancement Fund to honor a deceased past president. Notice of such donation will be sent to the family.

11/88 The October and November Fellowship mailings should encourage sending applications for nominees for Fellowship.

11/88 An independent auditor shall annually audit the Academy’s finances.

11/09 A member can be reinstated to Active Fellowship by approval of ¾ of the Board of Directors and payment of current dues.

11/09 If the Administrator receives a request by a member asking for a reduction or suspension of therequirement to pay dues, the request is to be forwarded to the Treasurer who will refer the matter to the Fellowship Committee for consideration. The request and the Fellowship Committee’s decision will be announced to the Board but the name of the member will not be disclosed.

10/11 One regular meeting, preferably in October, shall be dedicated to the past presidents of the Academy. At this meeting, the Immediate Past President, if available, shall give the Invocation.

10/11 A ‘History of the Academy”, if available, may be presented to all new fellows at their Induction.

There should be a primary person assigned, with a backup ready in case the primary cannot be at the meeting.
